8/4/2023 0 Comments Condor movie![]() ![]() A rather scary idea to think that kids are doing this in real life. ![]() Ruby has a younger brother, Sam (Blue Chapman) who’s the typical annoying sort who likes to torment his sister, but also likes to live stream. (ASMR - like those videos of people eating very close to a microphone or whispering.) Now that was funny, but it only got a snort of amusement from me. He’s handy and runs a ASMR vlog where he builds ships in bottles. Ruby’s dad Arthur (Colman Domingo), looks like a blue lumberjack. And here we get a sense that the visual direction wasn’t trying hard enough. But it really does feel like the animators took the foundation of Berk, adjusted it and renamed it Oceanside. This Oceanside looks incredibly familiar in layout to Berk in “How To Train Your Dragon.” Granted, Oceanside is contemporary with all the fixings of modern society: cars, electricity, cell phones and paved roads. View Gallery: Photos: DreamWork's 'Rudy Gillman, Teenage Kraken' 'How to Train Your Dragon' vibes are strong in the setting Not to be confused with the chilled village of Oceanside, California. Ruby’s mom Agatha (Toni Collette) is a high-powered bread-winner running a realty business in their seaside hamlet of Oceanside. Of course, there are teens out there who are like this, but it really feels forced on the characters. These teens are not about the patriarchy or post-colonial. But they still clearly want to go.Ĭlearly, the writers want Ruby and her friends to be “hip” (do we still use that word anymore?) and worldly. But lest we roll our eyes at them (and I already did), they pronounce prom as a post-colonial construct, blah, blah, blah. Ruby and her pals are eagerly anticipating the apparently most-important event in high school: Prom. How do they do this when their skin is blue and they lack the usual number of fingers and noses? Well, they’re from Canada. Ruby Gillman, voiced by Lana Condor, is part of a family of four krakens passing as humans. The reason it feels so mediocre is because it feels too similar to another fairly recent coming-of-age girl story. In fact, it felt as blah as a sandy beach with no ocean. Sadly, “Teenage Kraken” doesn’t hold up against the previous DreamWorks classics. So expectations are high with the latest movie, “ Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.” What is 'Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken' about? (“Puss In Boots: The Last Wish” is one of my favorites from last year’s selections.) But DreamWorks consistently surprises with great movies. DreamWorks Animation is a strong contender against Disney/Pixar for the animation crown.įrom “Shrek” to “Despicable Me,” both of which have their cult followings, to “Kung Fu Panda” and “How To Train Your Dragon” - and let's not forget the fantastically hilarious Neanderthal story “The Croods” -the Universal-owned animation studio has put out solid films over the years. ![]()
